Madagascar is located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. It is the world's fourth largest island, covering a total area of 587,041 square kilometres. This big island we love so, separated from Africa 165 million years ago, and since then its flora and fauna have evolved according to its own fantasy, like nowhere else in the world : lemurs are known worldwide, but the red island counts several endemic species of chameleons, fossas, frogs, birds, snakes, jumping rats, baobabs, carnivorous plants, orchids and many more strange "living beings"! With 80% of its flora, 40% of its birds, 98% of its reptiles being endemic, Madagascar is a naturalist's promised land!
The same is true for the Malagasy people, about 17 million : a unique blend of African and Asian, whose culture resembles no other worldwide. The population is divided in 18 ethnical groups. The relative isolation of the island due to geography and recent History, kept the traditional way of living, rites and the ancestral beliefs, very lively and genuine. In remote places (and there are so many here), time has stopped centuries ago and the local people will come smiling and running to you as children, so surprised by the whiteness of your skin. For the traveller hungering for something different, a dreamland!
As for Madagascar's landscapes, they are simply breath taking : The highlands' patchwork of rice terraces seem like Philippines or Vietnam; The bush and baobabs of the West remind you of Mother Africa; The lush tropical forest of the East is full of endemic frogs, chameleons, lemurs, birds; the canyons and mountains of the desertic "Great South" is our malagasy Colorado...
And did we tell you about our beaches? Clear crystal waters, sandy white beaches, whales and dolphins "cruising" at sea, all this completely unspoilt by mass tourism… Feeling in the mood of Robinson Crusoe? In some places here, only "Fridays" around, not a single other tourist!
Madagascar's touristic potential is huge and totally under exploited for the moment. If you are searching for a different and unknown destination, out of the beaten tracks, genuine hospitality, Madagascar is the place for you and now is the time to come.
