Trekking Makay

11 Days / 10 nights

If you look up for the Makay in a guide book or on a map, well you’d probably not find it ! The Makay is a remote no man’s land (a full day 4WD drive and a full day’s walk from Tulear !), unknown to most tour operators and guides, and totally deprived of  facilities… But what savage, otherworldly, extraordinary landscapes! The massif boasts deep canyons, impressive cliffs, sacred lakes with crocodiles, grottoes which have provided habitat for early mankind 2000 years ago… With an experienced Makay guide, we will trek deep down in the narrow gorges but also high up on the clifftops, camp on the sandy river banks, encounter the elusive lemurs of the spiny forest…
The last day, we will descend aboard a traditional dugout the Mangoky river, rich in birdlife; the opportunity also to see along the banks the rare villages and the Bara’s everyday life.

Highlights:
- Outstanding landscapes
- Great remoteness; absolutely no tourists!

For what type of traveller?
A totally “Into the wild” adventure. Forget about your phone, internet and prepare to leave at home anything having a link with the XXIst century!
The trekking is quite difficult : 8 days trekking in all, 8 hours approximately per day going up and down, under the sun. Yes, the Makay can be very hot!

Continue after Tulear to Morondava, along the Mozambique Coast : an unspoilt coastline of beautiful white beaches, crystal clear sea, spiny forests and and baobab, and the fascinating Vezo people, the nomad fishermen so reluctant to what we call civilization. The trip ends by the famous Baobab Alley and the tsingy of Bemaraha, both classified World Heritage.  Refer to the Tsingy, Baobabs and beaches tour.
